What's in a Name?

man trying to think of a name for his business

Choosing a name for a business is no small task. It’s a process filled with brainstorming, domain hunting, and endless searches to ensure your brilliant idea isn’t already taken by another company halfway across the world. In today’s digital landscape, securing a unique, meaningful, and available name is more difficult than ever.

I went through this exact struggle when naming Admin Up Tech. I wanted something that spoke to the core of what we do—reliable, professional remote hands and infrastructure support—but also something unique enough to stand out in a crowded industry. After countless ideas, each one either already taken or feeling uninspired, I finally stumbled upon “Admin Up.”

For those in network engineering, “Admin Up” has a specific meaning. It’s typically the last step after configuring a network port—when everything is set, tested, and ready for traffic. That concept resonated with me because, in many ways, that’s exactly what we aim to do: ensure our clients’ infrastructure is configured, tested, and ready to perform.

That said, I won’t pretend I love the name—it wasn’t my first choice, and it may not have been my tenth. But it was available, it carried meaning with the exact folks who'd be looking for us, and, most importantly, it worked. And sometimes, that’s what matters most: finding a name that fits well enough to get started and build a brand around.

The reality is, a name alone doesn’t make a company great—execution does. So while I may not have landed on the “perfect” name, I landed on one that represents what we do and allows us to move forward. And in the end, that’s what counts.
